SUSTAINABILITY

OUR MATERIALS AND PROCESSES

100% COTTON

KIKOY: All Sandfish kikoy fabrics are made from 100% natural cotton yarn sourced and manufactured in Kenya.

COTTONS: All other cottons used are originally sourced from India where only 100% natural fibres are used. Our cottons are imported to Kenya via boat and then manufactured locally by a team of skilled artisans.

ETHICALLY SOURCED & LOCALY PRODUCED

KIKOY: Made by hand using local artisans on a loom that uses zero electricty.

COTTON: Manufactured by our team of workers in Gilgil. We have so far invested three machines so our tailors can work from home and fit their lives around their work and not the other way round.

BASKETS: Handmade by local artisans in Kenya and then leather handles and trims added on in Gilgil by local craftsmen and women.

PLASTIC FREE

100% single use plastic free. By sourcing our material locally we are already low impact when it comes to plastic packaging. We are on a mission to go further, however, and are committed to banning the use of all plastics in both our production and packaging by 2024.

ZERO WASTE

One of the joys of manufacturing locally, is that we know where every square inch of unused material goes. We never throw anything away and any spare scraps of material go into bunting, coastie shorts, headbands or trims for our baskets. For those bits that really can't be used we give to local tailors so that they can use for their own craft productions.

SLOW FASHION

We go to great lengths to ensure that everything you buy from Sandfish stands the test of time. Some people worry that using such light cotton might mean it won't last long but we know this isn't the case. Where others might use as little as six stiches an inch, we never use less than 16 and this means that our clothes are extremely well made and won't fall apart
